New Trend Drives Used Yacht Sales and Refits to Merrill-Stevens Yachts and RMK

The United States marine industry has seen an increase in boat sales of more than 45% in the first quarter
of 2021, creating a shortage in inventory, long delays, and a new and exciting trend. “Boat accessories and
the availability of engines is at an all-time low,” says Merrill-Stevens Yachts Director of Yacht Sales Robert
Ponce, who also believes that this rise in interest in boat ownership will continue. With a delay on the
delivery of new vessels exceeding three to four years for many leading manufacturers, prospective yacht
owners are purchasing used and even abandoned vessels with the intent of having them customized
through a full restoration or renovation, also called a refit.

A refit is the renovation of a yacht and can include minor and major repairs, mending, paint, electronic
systems, bottom paint, carpentry work, and additional projects. While intensive, refits can be completed
by shipyards in anywhere from a month to a year, depending on the size of the project, allowing
prospective boat owners to get their new yacht out onto the water in less time than if purchasing a new
boat.

 “At the International Yacht Brokers Association (IYBA) Summit, we met with yacht brokers who are
traveling around the country searching for used boats,” says MS Yachts and RMK MS Marketing Director
Nicole Squartino. “Condition is an important factor of the value of a vessel, but buyers are more willing
than before to wait while the vessel is customized and restored,” Nicole continues. For RMK Merrill Stevens,

refit projects for the yard.
